On April 9th 2025 campaigners of the Forget-me-Not Families Uniting visited 10 Downing Street to deliver a petition for a graduated driver licence scheme to safeguard young and novice drivers.
This scheme has widespread support from organisations including the AA, RAC, Roadpeace and Brake – the road safety charity
Graduated driving licences save lives
According to RoadPeace, the national charity for road crash victims, several countries – including Canada, Australia, New Zealand and many US States – have introduced graduated driving licences.
A spokesperson for RoadPeace said: “In these countries, there has been a reduction in deaths and serious injuries in crashes involving young drivers by between 20 and 40 per cent following the introduction of graduated driving licensing.
“The evidence is overwhelming – graduated driving licensing saves lives.
“But despite the overwhelming evidence, and pleas from bereaved families and leading experts for many years, graduated driving licensing has yet to be introduced in the UK.”
Motoring organisation the RAC supports graduated driving licences.
A spokesperson for the RAC said: “The RAC believes a form of graduated driving licensing, featuring a minimum supervised learning period and restrictions on the number of young passengers permitted in the car, could help save lives on the country’s roads.
